Introduction

This lecture invited Ms. Su-ying Ou, director of the Department of compilation and research, Academia Historica, to share with us her research on Japanese entomologist Shiraki Tokuichi.

Shiraki Tokuichi (1882-1970) was born in Hokkaido, Japan. He entered the Sapporo Agricultural School in 1900 and studied under Professor Shōnen Matsumura, an expert in entomology in Japan. The following year after graduating from Sapporo Agricultural School, Shiraki Tokuichi came to Taiwan, and actively engaged in insect surveys and pest control research beneficial to Taiwan's agriculture. In March 1928, after the establishment of the Taihoku Imperial University, Shiraki Tokuichi was hired as the chair professor of entomology and sericulture. During his stay in Taiwan, Shiraki Tokuichi laid the foundation for Taiwanese entomological research.
